My friends at Mr Bale asked me to come along and take some photos of larger products – a series of dog beds and pet accessories they are selling on-line. When I helped them set up their on-line shop initially I showed Mel and Shawn how to photograph their own products and we set up a small ‘studio space’ in their garage. Most of the photos on their site are taken and cleaned up by Mel using nothing more than a little digital camera and Microsoft Office products.

This meant that they could take photos of their own products and get them to market quicker. They decided to photograph everything on a white backdrop because they sell on other digital platforms where this is a requirement, so they can use the same photos there.

You don’t need a high-end camera these days to sell online, even a normal compact digital camera will do the job well. As for the white backdrop, you’ll be surprised what you can do just with everyday items you have in your home.

Anyway, here are the photos I took using my Nikon D5200 camera with a speed light and using domestic flood lights as fill lights.

Let me know if you’d like me to take some photos, or if you need some guidance to set up your own product studio.
